As in 2020, we were also able to participate in the big digital Christmas party of Vodafone Germany this year. We supplemented the livestream from the ski hall with interactive AR applications, which the employees could use directly and easily on their smartphones.

Giga Ski Race

With an entertaining AR game, which served as qualifying for the show, we started the dramaturgical build-up of tension for the event. Already two weeks before the event, the employees could compete for the highest score in the interactive ski race and enter their scores on the leaderboard.

Here's how it works:

To start the race, players can first create a personal avatar. To do this, they place their face in the designated area and take a selfie.

By moving their heads to the left or right, the players can avoid the obstacles in order to avoid minus points. At the same time, gifts and candy canes can be collected to earn extra points. The aim is to show stamina and not lose power in order to collect as many points as possible.

The longer the players stay on their feet, the faster the ride becomes! On the fourth collision with an obstacle, the power is exhausted and the game round ends.

The best scores are collected on the leaderboard. The employees can repeat the game as often as they like and fight their way to first place.
The best were allowed to experience the event live on site.

AR Face Filter

In addition to the gamification approach, we implemented various Christmas face filters that Vodafone employees could use shortly before, during and after the event. From the classic Father Christmas with a beard to the ski hipster with a retro look, there was something for everyone.

Animations and interactions made every filter a special experience. The selfies taken could be saved on their own smartphones and sent to friends and family. In addition, the pictures could be shared in the livestream.

For the conception of the game mechanics, we first developed a prototype that represents the idea in a highly simplified way and still has the functionality to play through and test the concept.

In order for the game to remain both exciting and fun for as long as possible, a process of testing and approaching the ideal difficulty level and complexity takes place.

For the technical implementation of an interactive augmented reality application based on this concept, we were brought on board by the lead agency Oliver Schrott Kommunikation.
