Concept / UX Design / Development
Graffiti is ephemeral. Images are often painted over and the protagonists keep their identities and structures secret. Under these conditions, how can the fascination surrounding the concept of graffiti really be conveyed?
To accompany the museum and digital presentation of the exhibition “Eine Stadt Wird Bunt”, we are developing an app that will use augmented reality to make long-painted-over images visible at their original locations and bring the subculture back to life.
The keyword is location-based augmented reality: the visitor’s smartphone shows the right content in the right form at the right place.
Participation and outreach through user content: The Style Creator allows users to become part of the graffiti scene by creating and sharing their own styles in the AR environment. The best shared styles will be highlighted on the app’s website.
The interactive map provides an overview of the 55 spots distributed across Hamburg. It is not only part of the app, but can also be found in the museum and on the landing page with the incentive to download the app.
The spots also include brief information about the artwork and the artist. In AR mode, users see photos of the original artwork integrated into the current cityscape.
To make it easy for all target groups to get started with the application, we created three user personas as part of the UX research. This resulted in a five-step onboarding process that introduces users to the application’s features. Easy-to-understand graphics and short descriptions guide users through the application.
To ensure that the exhibition and app speak the same visual language, we developed an interface design that used the existing CI guidelines and expanded it with illustrative elements that provided inspiration from hip-hop culture and the sprayer scene.
